Sign Up NOW for the Groton Floor Hockey League (GFHL) 2007 Season.

Well, its time to sign up and support the league again. This year we have done away with the two divisions and have gone with a single division that is expected to consist of 6 teams. Having six teams in the same division will add to game diversity. I expect a good season full of good fun competition. We have also changed the method in which players register to play in the league. In the past all registrations for the league were done as "Team Registrations". Instead of team registrations we are having all players register individually ($35 for Groton residents and $50 for Non residents). Once a player is registered the league Administrator will work with Team Captains to get players associated with a team. We are always trying to grow the league so if you or anyone you know is interested in playing floor hockey (Sneakers not Skates) please contact the league administrator for more information. All players should have their registration forms in the mail by 03-JAN-2007 (Of course the sooner the better). Also, like last year the league is supporting one weeknight a week for player practice time. This season practice time will be scheduled for every Friday from 6:00-8:30 PM. Practice time is always run as a pick-up game so by signing up for the league you have access to playing 2 games a week which is great for staying in shape. The league also supports a few weeks of Pre-Season practice time which is open to anyone who wants to check out the players and organization of the league. If you come to Pre-season Practice you will get to play some pick-up games with league players and find out more about the league. Pre-Season practice is scheduled for 15-DEC-2006, 05-JAN-2006, and 12-JAN 2006 from 6:00-8:30 pm at the Cutler Middle School. Come in and get warmed up for the season or come and check out the league.

If you would like more information please contact the league Administrator Kirk Kellogg at kirkkellogg@hotmail.com. (Please include GFHL in subject line of e-mail.)

Hockey, CT, Connecticut, Floor, Street, Deck

Hello all,

It is a perfect time to start getting in shape for the Winter GFHL season by joining the rest of the Street Hockey community and signing up for the Fall Pick-up games that get played at the rink near the library in Groton. We have a lot of fun and the games are fun and competitive. Its only $10 for residents and I think $15 for non-residents. If you sign up you do not need to make it to every session. Below are the details of the program. You can sign up by contacting the Groton rec department to get the paper work or you can sign up online quick and easy. To sign up online first go to the Groton Rec department web site (http://www.town.groton.ct.us/depts/parksrec/). Then click on the "Register Online" link on the left hand side of the page. This link will bring you to "Active.com" website that handles the online sign ups. It only takes a few minutes and I have done this several times with no problem. There is no excuse not to sign up today. Session starts 07-SEP-2006 and online registration closes 06-SEP-2006. Program details below.

Help Support our Quest for a Larger Gym

Hello All,

As the GFHL coordinator I want what is best for the league. I know that last year the gym we had available to us for the adult program was a smaller than we would have liked. I want to thank you all for making last season a successful one. This year there is a push lead by Phil Butta to convince the Groton school system to allow us access to a larger facility. However, there is resistance from some people within the Groton School system to allow us to use larger facilities. They believe that our hockey sticks cause damage to the gymnasium floors. Many of us in the floor hockey community have never seen damage caused by hockey sticks to the gym floors and we are going to speak with the Groton Board of Education in an attempt to convince them to allow us to use a larger gym for the GFHL program. The more Groton residence that show up at the meeting the more effective of request will be. So please try to support the floor hockey community and join us at the upcoming Board of Education meeting being held on Monday, September 11 at 7 p.m. at the Town Hall Annex (134 Groton Long Point Road, Groton 06340). I hope to see you all there and I hope that we are able to run this program in a larger venue this season.

A Quick Reminder to All Players

Hello everyone. I would like everyone to remember that the referees working our games do not care which team wins. They are not out to get any of us and call the games as they see them. There is no need to vocalize your own private concerns about any one call the referees may or may not have made. In fact it is league policy that only team captains are allowed to discuss calls with the refs (Discuss not argue). It is well within the rights of any of our refs to give out “unsportsmanlike” penalties to any player that vocalizes disapproval with a call. So please, treat the refs with respect they are doing there best to keep the peace and we should all work to make the GFHL run as smoothly as possible.

Take Care

Kirk Kellogg GFHL Coordinator.

GFHL Rule Clarifications and Additions as of 31-JAN-2006

1) Due to restrictions on playing surface we have gone to a 3 on 3 plus goalies game format.

2) Since we are now playing a 3 on 3 format penalties will be handled differently. If a player incurs a penalty the player receiving the penalty will go into the penalty box but the team loosing this player will still leave 3 players on the floor. The team that now has a power play will now field 4 players gaining the advantage of 1 additional player. If the team that has received a penalty receives a second penalty they will then go down to 2 players on floor and the other team will continue to have 4 players (Hence a 2 player advantage).

3) The Home bench for games will be the bench near the lobby of the school. The away team's bench will be in the corner of the gym.

4) We will be playing with a running clock. The clock will be stopped if a team calls time. The clock will be stopped during the last 2 minutes of the third period if the score is within 2 goals. All other times the clock will remain running. The score keeper will be keeping track of player goals and one assist. Also, there are many more instances where the ball will be considered in play as it will be bouncing off of gym structures and into play more often than it did in the old gym.

5) Face off areas will be marked by a tape.

6) Deliberate pushing and shoving of another player will result in a roughing penalty (This includes running though another player when they are in your way.) Incidental contact is still allowed. The distinction between incidental contact and roughing penalties involves the perceived intent behind the contact. If there is no clear intent with the contact then it is incidental contact. If the referees perceive that contact is made to knock a player off balance, pin them against the boards, or to push through a player to get to the ball then a roughing penalty will be called. If two players race to get to a loose ball and some incidental contact results then no roughing penalty will be called. (However, if any contact is perceived as deliberate then a roughing penalty will be called).

7) How we will handle penalty situations when at team only has 3 eligible players at the time of the penalty.

A) If the team that only has 3 Eligible players receives a penalty then the game will be played as a 3 on 2 power play situations. (With each additional penalty the length of time the game remains 3 on 2 will be extended. This will require that the player who received the first penalty be allowed out of the box early in order to maintain a 3 on 2 situations.)

B) If the team that only has 3 eligible players gets into a power play situation then the game will be played as a 3 on 2 power play situation. (With each additional penalty extending the length of time the game remains 3 on 2)

8) Time Outs and Injuries. An injury time out will no longer count as a teams timeout. If an injury occurs the team with the injured player will not be charged with a time out. (Please do not abuse this rule by faking it)

9) Clarification of sliding rule: Any player that deliberately drops to the ground and continues to move (Slide) will be called for sliding. However, a player may drop to the ground to block a shot as long as there is no lateral movement when the player drops to the ground.

10) In general all Inline roller hockey league rules apply unless otherwise specified above.

GFHL Week 3 Review

From the look of things players have started to get their wind back and hockey legs under them. Overall the games were closer than in past weeks and the competition was high. Chelsea Groton and Team Yardney remain undefeated. Chelsea Groton defeated the Bulldogs in what could be called a “spirited game”. Team Yardney snapped the Pepperhells 11 game winning streak that had carried over from last season by soundly thrashing the Pepperhells in an 11- 4 victory. Also, in the A Division EB Gold defeated EB Green and in the B division EB Green (B Div) defeated the Wildcats. Thank you all for your continued support of the league.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that the GFHL is a recreational league. And although competition is encouraged we should never lose sight that we are all playing for fun and possibly exercise. There is never a reason to take any action that might injure another player. This is a non-checking league and although some body contact is expected deliberate pushing, or hands to the face, or fighting with another player will not be tolerated. Please keep this in mind when you are chasing that little orange ball around.

Take care all.

GFHL A&B Practice session updates

Hello all,

Every Thursday two practice sessions are scheduled and your attendance is requested. A Division Practice time is scheduled from 6:15 pm to 7:15 pm and B Division practice time is scheduled from 7:30 to 8:30 pm. A players are expected to show up and practice during the A Division Practice time and B Division players are expected to show up and practice during B Division time. (Some exceptions can be made but you must contact me first). Furthermore Goalies are welcome any time and the Division you play for does not matter. However, you might want to check with me to see how many goalies are expected to show.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We could still use a few more A Division players at practice. Currently most of the players taking advantage of this practice time are Chelsea Groton players. It would be wonderful to see representatives from the other A Division teams at these practice sessions. They are fun and excellent excercise.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Representatives from all 4 B division teams have been showing up for practice and the support is excellent. Special thanks to team Yardney and their devotion to practice time and the league as a whole. They are a welcome addition to the league and I hope they will return season after season. Please continue to support the B division practice time and the league by showing up and having fun.

GFHL Announcement: Parking lot safety at William Seely School.

Hello all,

According to one of Groton's finest (Police officer) there have been issues with cars getting broken into in the William Seely area. The police recommend that everyone parking at the William Seely school lock their car doors. Currently there have been no instances where a GFHL member has had items stolen from their vehicle but we would like to stress that prevention may be required. So please lock your cars when you come to play. Any questions or concerns please let me know.

GFHL A&B Division Practice times and Attendance

A Division Report:

Last night we had our first practice session and attendance was minimal for A Division players with only Chelsea Groton players showing up for practice. We definitely could use a few more A Division players showing up. We did manage to have 2 teams of 3 players and goalies and the practice was successful but more support would be appreciated. Remember this is additional play time and everyone should take advantage of it.

B Division Report:

The B division turnout was stronger than the A division with representatives from EB Green, Wildcats, Yardney and the Pepperhells all turning out to play. However, a few more bodies would have been welcome. We still did not have 2 full lines. B division practice was however very successful and fun. Come on B division players please set aside this day and time for practice and support the GFHL.

Thank you all in advance and you can leave a message on this blog if you need to contact me.
